The thumbnail sketches made it easier for me to do my zine. The hardest part of deciding the placement of text and pictures was taken care of by doing the thumbnails.

Instead of looking for magazine layouts to use as a model and inspiration, I chose to create my own.

Even though in class on this day, November 13, I was tired of drawing, but when I got to these exercises I was somewhat relieved that they weren't cubes although angular shapes are still present. I was glad that we were given the opportunity to complete the exercise.

Drawings of Models

I'm not satisfied with my models; therefore I am not satisfied with the drawings. The second drawing is actually my scale model made for today's class. There are many blanks and things that I have to figure out. I know the drawing of my final model will be better because I will actually like the model and put more confidence and work into the drawing.

Still Life Shading

I found the crosshatching technique to be more difficult than the blurred/all over effect and the diagonal line that I used in the other drawing.

With these exercises I definetely "experimented" with the techniques as the book said. I found the pencil drawings to be too messy. I love my pen drawings. Using pen creates a clean, neat look, even with the scribbling technique. Also with the pen it is a total commitment that I am making which is scary yet, beneficial at the same time.

In my layout I tried to mimick the placement of text and color and images to a certain degree to maintain a little originality. In place of the woman hanging out on the tree limb, I place tags that each represent the elements line, value, texture, form, space, and pattern. I chose red because of its vibrant energy which relates to studio in a sense that you want to create objects that are vibrant and eye catching, not anything dull. I put a matte knife where the rolex once was. The matte knife has been my best friend in every project we have done so far in studio. The HB and 2B pencils represent our drawing class. The two classes coincide and you can use things learned in one in the other class.
For this post, the assignment was to look at double page ads in architectural magazines. We were to look at the different techniques used as far as placement of text and images, and how colors and texture were incorporated. I liked this ad for Rolex watches that was in Wallpaper magazine. After finding an inspirational ad, using the theme "What makes studio, studio?", our task was to create a double page spread in our sketchbooks addressing the mentioned theme.

My initial thoughts about this project were, "What in the world am I supposed to be doing?" The assignment was to make a project that was a mixture of two of our classmates projects. I collaborated with Ashley's, http://ashleyb17.blogspot.com, memory container and Anna's, http://lifesketch-anna.blogspot.com, memory container. For my intermediate project I mixed the angles and vibrant colors from Ashley's container and the tissue paper and curves from Anna's. I found my next two projects to be a lot better than the first one. With the next two, I simply took small elements from each one and mixed them together.

Final Pencil Box

With my final pencil box I added flaps to close off the box. I was careful with the glue so that the drawer wouldn't get stuck in the back. I took away the design paper and created a design with the subdued yellow paper that mimicked the long lines of the pencils.

This is my second making of my pencil case. I threw the first one away before I realized I hadn't photographed it. The second attempt was more successful with different supplies and adhesives.

I can honestly say I enjoyed drawing these pictures. Now that I have been shown how to dissect the side view of face it is easier to draw them.

4 Drawings with People

I have mixed emotions when it comes to drawing people. Sometimes I like to and sometimes I don't. I don't like the pressure of making the picture look exactly like the person. Some of the people don't have details in their face and one of the drawings is completed because the people moved and I couldn't imagine the scene to finish it. I have to work on drawing faces.

Builidings and Trees

I was sitting downtown and had already drawn 3 pictures and was looking around for a fourth one. I was tired and frustrated when I turned to the left a little and saw these 4 different buildings all intertwined. This is my favorite out of the four simply because of how one of the buildings comes out between the trees.

Each building has a voice. Each one has something to say.

The thing that caught my attention with this perspective was the steps that I was sitting on. They each had insightful sayings on them. I wish I would have focused more in the foreground rather than what is behind them.

The Worst

I started this drawing with a clear mind. I was focused and ready, but when I started to draw things and lines just didn't turn out how I wanted them. With this scene I found that there was too much going on in the background which I obviously didn't capture.

Not So Bad

This was my first drawing of downtown. I'm not all that satisfied with this one. I definitely could have added more to the background.

Second Time Around

So I went back to draw this house and decided to add in some of the detail that i didn't show in the first one. The trees at the bottom were kind of scraggly and thin so added in the negative spaces to show that. I also took more time on the chimney trying to draw it exactly how I saw it. This one turned out a lot better, I think, because of the detail added.

First Try

This is my first drawing of this house. Instead of drawing the buildings I noticed this house beside the Mexican restaurant on Tate Street. The chimney is red which is the main factor that caught my eye. Another thing that I liked about this view was how the side of the house was surrounded by trees.

Bicycle

When I sat down to draw this bike I wanted to scream "NO!", but I think it turned out pretty good. The assignment was to draw the negative space, but I forgot all about that and just tried to draw everything.

The Bar Stool

When we did negative space in high school I remember drawing a stool. I liked drawing the stool because it sent me back for a little while to my high school art class. It was like deja vu.

Laundry Room Table

This was the most difficult of negative space drawings that I have done. It took a while to complete this one. It was hard to not get the table legs confused and sometimes I would end up repeating a space I had already done.

I had a hard time looking for things to draw in the dorm. I wanted to draw things other than chairs, but that was about the only interesting pieces that I could find.

My First Post

I am new to the whole blog thing so there aren't many sites that I have visited, but there was one that stood out to me. The site is Wagonized and it features work by the amazingly talented France Belleville. One thing about her artwork that stood out to me was the way she shows shadows in her drawings. Instead of shading using a technique like when you color, she uses crossed lines to create shadows. Shading is a technique that I tend to stay away from, but France's drawings inspire me to not be afraid of shading and also give me a new way of doing it.
